CInSt Research Seminar "Soviet Industry and the Political Effect of Market Liberalization in Russia": William Pyle (Middlebury College), Timur Natkhov (HSE University)
You are welcome to watch the video of the seminar
We track voting outcomes at the district and provincial levels in Russia’s national elections before and after communism’s collapse and document asymmetric reactions to the liberalization of markets in 1992. Electoral support for pro-market incumbent declined most in areas with communist-era structural inheritances, namely larger share of manufacturing employment, that made them most vulnerable to the economic shock of the market reforms. In a manner not dissimilar from recent research on the "China trade shock", post-liberalization politics reflect pre-liberalization economics.
