Higher Education Studies

The Higher School of Economics Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) in Moscow Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of higher education studies. We invite aspiring researchers to join a multidisciplinary team to work on educational studies.

The job involves:

  • working under the direct supervision of Professor Maria Yudkevich;
  • pursuing own research in parallel with working on CInSt’s research projects in five broad areas:

· faculty salaries, contracts and career concerns; 
· academic inbreeding and mobility; 
· faculty productivity, teaching and research in Russian universities; 
· university rankings; 
· university governance;

  • writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
  • public presentations of candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community.

Some teaching is encouraged, though not required.

The Center offers access to its databases and analytical software, as well as Russian CAP data, Russian Monitoring of education markets and organizations data, Web of Science, Scopus, InCites, SciVal.

Requirements:

  • a PhD from an international research university in such fields as: education/sociology/economics;
  • a strong theoretical and empirical background economics, sociology or education;
  • ability to work in a team;
  • fluent English.

Relevant experience is an asset, but not required.

The Higher School of Economics Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) in Moscow Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of higher education studies. We invite aspiring researchers to join a multidisciplinary team to work research in economics and sociology of education.

The job involves: 

  • working under the direct supervision of Professor Maria Yudkevich;
  •  pursuing own research in parallel with working on CInSt’s research projects in four broad areas:

· peer effects transmission in online and offline social networks;
· peer effect structure in different educational systems; 
· social network analysis methods and techniques; 
· determinants of student achievement; 

  • writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;

The Center offers access to its databases which contain information about student academic achievements, socioeconomic characteristics, behavior and data about dynamics online and offline social networks. You are also welcome to construct a new dataset on student social networks.

The Higher School of Economics Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) in Moscow Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of higher education studies. We invite aspiring researchers to join a multidisciplinary team to work on scientometrics amd research policy studies.

The job involves: 

  •  pursuing own research in parallel with working on CInSt’s research projects in five broad areas:

· scientometrics, including bibliometrics and altmetrics;
· research evaluation; 
· performance-based research funding systems and their impact on scholarly communication; 
· peer effects in different academic systems; 
· mobility of researchers;

  • writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
  • participation in organization of the events and other contribution to the Center’s development;
  • public presentations of candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community.

Some teaching is encouraged, though not required.

The Center offers access to Web of Science, Scopus, InCites and SciVal Benchmarking databases and analytical tools and also has access to several datasets which contain various information on Russian and international R&D systems.

The job involves:

  • working under the direct supervision of Maria Semenova, Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the CInSt, HSE (msemenova@hse.ru);
  • pursuing their own research in parallel with working on the CInSt research projects, both in three broad areas:

· banking in Russia; 
· the influence of institutional diversity and institutional change on banks’ stability, profitability and other outcomes and characteristics: cross-country analysis; 
· households’ financial strategies in emerging economies;

  • writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
  • participation in organization of the events and other contribution to the Center’s development;
  • public presentations of candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community.

The CInSt offers the access to its databases covering Russian banks’ financial statements (Mobile database) as well as Russian household longitudinal surveys (e.g. RLMS-HSE).

Requirements: 

  • a PhD from an international research university in such fields as Economics, Banking and/or Finance by September, 2018;
  • PhD thesis topic and/or research interests and experience close to the fields mentioned above;
  • clear research proposal and research plan for the period of postdoc contract;
  • strong empirical skills and interest in applied empirical research;
  • ability to work in a team;

Economic Analysis of Public Procurement

The Higher School of Economics, the Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt), Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of economic analysis of public procurement and corruption practices. In the CInSt we are interested in theoretical and empirical/experimental approaches to research in public procurement and corruption practices in general. Usually, we use micro level approach studying individual behavior, rules and institutions.

The job involves: 

  • working under the direct supervision of Paola Valbonesi or Koen Schoors, Leading Research Fellows at the CInSt;
  • pursuing own research in parallel with working on the CInSt’s research projects in several broad areas:

· corruption and rent-seeking activities, 
· awarding procedures and efficiency, 
· auction and contract design, 
· SMEs participation and subcontracting, 
· public procurement and social aims, 
· public procurement and local (or regional) growth;

  • writing papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with CInSt researchers;
  • participating in the organization of HSE events and providing other contribution to CInSt’s development;
  • presenting research in public to domestic researchers in the field and to broader academic community;
  • some teaching (though this activity is not compulsory).


CInSt offers access to: 

  • procurement datasets in Russia which contain micro information on bids, prices and contractual details and information on regional characteristics;
  • dataset on elections of all levels (federal, regional, municipal) in all Russia regions;
  • Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey-Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE), which was designed to monitor the effects of Russian reforms on health and economic welfare of households and individuals in Russia.


We are looking for applicants with:

  • strong theoretical or/and empirical background in economics and PhD degree in econometrics/economics/empirical economics/experimental economics from a recognized university;
  • high motivation in running research in public procurement and/or corruption; 
  • a will to join team work, but which are also able to work independently; 
  • proficiency in spoken and written English.

Economic History

The Higher School of Economics, the Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt), Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of economic history with the emphasis on social mobility.

The job involves: 

  • Working under the direct supervision of Professor John Nye, the International Academic Advisor and a Research Director of CInSt, and professor of economic history in George Mason University.
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of different text data sets. In particular, this includes collection, digitalization, computer procession and rigorous statistical analysis of text collections available online and in Russian historical archives.
  • Writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Public presentations of candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community.

Some teaching is encouraged, though not required. 

The Center offers access to the archives of selected historical data sets.

Requirements: 

  • a PhD from an international research university in such fields as: economics/computer science/sociology; 
  • a good knowledge of programming and computer data base manipulation is a must; 
  • a strong theoretical and empirical background economics, sociology or education; 
  • ability to work in a team; 
  • fluent English.
