Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis 2018

Center for Institutional Studies of Higher School of Economics organised the 12th Annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis «EU Practices for Young Researchers Studying Economics of Institutional Development» on the June 30 — July 6. Let us see how it was.

During a whole week students and young researchers presented and discussed their projects, received feedback from faculty and tried a new presentation format Pecha Kucha. The scope of issues discussed was very wide: from financial markets and politics to education. RSSIA 2018 was supported by Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Programme of the European Commission.

Faculty on RSSIA also gave lectures about related topics. Maria Yudkevich (Higher School of Economics) discussed efficiency of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 and research performance of Russian universities. John Nye (George Mason University) gave necessary tools for creating and presenting research and showed changes in tax policy on vine in Britain. Alexey Bessudnov (University of Exeter) brought into focus the importance of quantitative data analysis in the field of education and raised a problem about discrimination job policy. Anna Kochanova (Cardiff Business School) gave lectures about corruption and political connections. Paola Valbonesi (Higher School of Economics) talked about rules, regulation, and institutions in procurement. Koen Schoors (Ghent University) touched topics of politics, banking and corruption. Ruben Enikolopov (New Economic School) gave a guest lecture about correlation between social media and political outcomes.

The Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis benefited my research and academic development tremendously. Not only did the critical comments and questions of the faculty provide me with new perspectives on how to think about my project, but the informal discussions with experienced and caring academics also allowed me to consider and contemplate potential solutions to the most pressing issues of my research. I especially enjoyed the exchanges with the bright and motivated attendees of the summer school, who provided me with invaluable feedback during my presentations and over food in the evenings.

At the end of Summer School participants and faculty reviewed the work carried out and the student of MSU Viktor Veterinarov was awarded for the most successful short presentation «Estimation of Ethnic Discrimination Effects in the Real Estate Rent Market». 3 participants got a certificate to take part in PhD seminar and 2 participants — to present their research on Analytics for Management and Economics Conference. 

We are thankful to everyone for being with us and we hope our participants will succeed in having their papers published in acknowledged scientific journals.
